Koll&Burg Design: “Constantly discovering new things”

WATT is always on the lookout for unusual entrepreneurs, concepts and ideas that deserve a bigger stage. This time we’re meeting Willem van Kollenburg of Koll&Burg Design.

Let’s start with you Willem, who are you?

I’m Willem van Kollenburg. 39 years old and owner of Koll&Burg Design. I have a girlfriend and son who’s 7 months old.

And what is Koll&Burg Design?

First of all, Koll&Burg Design is my passion. It’s a full-service creative agency that specialises in the strategic development of brand identities. In other words, translating great ideas into strong brands.

Your website exudes love for the hospitality industry. Where does that come from?

That love formed at a young age. And business-wise it started at ZwartWit Koffie, where I got the chance to develop all of the branding, marketing and communications. After that, I had the opportunity to help several other wonderful hospitality businesses such as Fifth NRE, Restaurant Olijf, Manca, Restaurant Crijns, and many more.

What do you mean for this sector?

I try to be a partner who holds up a mirror to parties both internally and externally. To help them reach their target audience in the most unique way possible.

Can you give us a take on your process? How do you go about your work?

I think getting better acquainted with the client is hugely important. Seeing if there’s a click. Of course, once we start working together, this process can vary from client to client. But the average branding process with me starts with a strategy session. After that, I delve deeper into the material and develop the concept. Then I create the visual identity, with the ultimate aim of delivering a brand book. We then sit down to see what the strategy and execution will be like for developing all the communications and rolling them out where necessary.

Can you choose a case that perfectly demonstrates the quality you offer?

I’m still proud of the Fifth NRE project. That was my first project as an entrepreneur and I got to take on literally everything. This was immensely exciting and enlightening. And it’s also important to mention that the results still speak for themselves.

How do you hope people will perceive your work?

I hope to create an experience where people can discover something new that appeals to them over and over again.

What is your dream brand to work for one day?

In the sports world, I hope to have the opportunity to work for PSV one day. In terms of hospitality, a Michelin star restaurant, a whiskey brand and a wine brand are all on my list. That makes four. I know, I’m lured in by too many challenges. ;)

Who would you like to have a coffee with from the Brainport region?

I think it would be interesting to get a taste of what goes on at the High Tech Campus.

Finally, what’s something people need to know about you that hardly anyone knows?

That I had my own brand of watches until last year. I did that for 2.5 years with a partner.
